David N. Gottlieb

Academics: David N. Gottlieb earned his Master of Arts in Divinity and his PhD in the History of Judaism from the University of Chicago Divinity School. David has written numerous scholarly articles and reviews, and is the author of Second Slayings: The Binding of Isaac and the Formation of Jewish Memory (Gorgias Press, 2019). He is the former director of Jewish Studies, and a member of the teaching faculty in Jewish Studies, at the Spertus Institute for Jewish Learning and Leadership in Chicago.


Affordable Housing Development: David co-founded and served as the founding executive director of Full Circle Communities, a philanthropic, nonprofit that develops, acquires, and preserves affordable housing and provides supportive services to its residents. Full Circle has developed or preserved more than 2,000 units of affordable housing and provided supportive services to its residents.


Jewish Contemplative Practice: David is also a teacher of Jewish meditation, having studied with Rabbi Sam Feinsmith, Rabbi Jordan Bendat Appel, and others. His study of meditation began in the Zen tradition, but he sought out and found teachers of Jewish practice. During this time, he co-authored Letters to a Buddhist Jew  with Rabbi Akiva Tatz (Targum Press, 2004).

A Journey Toward Jewish Mindfulness

David N. Gottlieb is a dynamic teacher and speaker on issues of moment in Jewish life. He brings knowledge, humor, curiosity, and sensitivity to his talks, seminars, and classes. As an adult learner himself, David welcomes the opportunity to engage with congregations and communities across the Jewish spectrum.

Filmed at the William Breman Jewish Heritage and Holocaust Museum in Atlanta, Georgia in cooperation with the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta.

David Gottlieb is a student and teacher of Jewish mindfulness practice. He began studying meditation in the Zen Buddhist tradition in 1998, and in the Jewish tradition shortly thereafter. David is co-founder of Full Circle Communities, a Chicago-based nonprofit developer of affordable housing and provider of supportive services. He is also currently a PhD candidate in the History of Judaism at the University of Chicago Divinity School.

Teacher

David is an adjunct member of the faculty in Jewish Studies at the Spertus Institute for Jewish Learning and Leadership in Chicago. He teaches on Jewish Identity, Judaism and World Religions, Jewish Memory, and a variety of other topics. David also loves teaching adult learners at synagogues in the Chicago area, and is available for scholar-in-residence engagements throughout the U.S. and Canada.
